So I had a photo shoot for a client, Simon B (Texan Eyewear) on Wednesday. Obviously because its eyewear this is a beauty shot. We wanted to create a soft glow in back of the model but still keeping it fairly dark. We did that by shooting it on a black backdrop and lighting it with a flash head that had a colored gel on it. We used a soft box that was placed to the left of the model (my right) and we had to raise the tripod fairly high as to not get the soft box to show up in the glasses.

My assistant Rob was on the other side with a silver reflector. The reason I use him and not a reflector on a stand is because I like the flexibility of the reflector and what it can do with light when its being used by someone that understands light very well (Thanks Rob!) This also allows the model to move around and he can follow her with the reflector. On a stand that would not be possible.

Makeup & Hair was by Jessica Cohen and model was Marina eva

Here is a light diagram showing the setup followed by actual photo of the setup and a closeup of the light that was behind the model.

Alien Bee Beauty Dish Bag

Monday, December 1st, 2008

bag

So I’ve been using the Alien Bee 22″ Beauty dish for a while now and my biggest pet peeve about it has always been that it does not come with a bag or the option for a bag. This might seem like not much of a big deal to anyone, but if you’ve ever done a location shoot and had to carry one around without a bag you already know what I’m talking about.

I’m a big fan of Alien Bee, some would even say huge. I just find it very strange that they offer bags for all of there other equipment except the beauty dish. Well after some googleing I found that there was someone out there much more frustrated  with this then I. Someone so frustrated that he would manufacture his own bag. Jerry Kacey is his name, founder of  Kacey Enterprises.com. If I would actually express my actual joy to this man for creating this bag, I think he would be frightened, LOL. No, but seriously, he has created a great bag. To be honest even after reading great reviews on it I was still a bit sketchy. I mean most equipment bags of any kind for photography go for at least 100$ if not 200$, so when I saw the price tag of 85$, I thought to myself “Oh boy, I hope it good one”. Anyone that buys from the internet often knows what i mean, you don’t always get what you pay for.

Not only did I get this bag super fast by UPS. Not only was his customer service personal and fantastic, but man! What a bag. Instead of me trying to describe it here is the description from the site.

Beauty Dish/Grid Travel Bag

The Beauty Dish/Grid Travel Bag is the perfectly designed bag to carry your equipment on location. It is constructed out of a heavy duty ballistic nylon exterior. It features #10 zippers, separate compartment for grid and plenty of padding. It will fit all the major brands of 22″ Beauty Dishes.”

Oh ya, did i mention he makes a grip for it too? I think I will stop here and let you visit his website to see for yourself. Great stuff Jerry!
